Time for a change...

I want to change the way we dress and look at clothes. In 2018, I realized that designing clothes nobody needed was not the way forward. So instead of designing more clothes, I wanted to be part of the solution; to teach women how to make conscious choices in their wardrobe by decluttering and focusing on what makes them feel great.

I’m on a mission to help you be the best version of yourself

Sister, you deserve better than to walk around in clothes that don’t fit correctly and are made of terrible fabrics. You are worth spending a little more on clothes that look and feel great. You deserve to feel confident in what you wear and know you look your best.

I am passionate about changing the culture in which we dress. As a seasoned designer, I feel it is my responsibility to educate you on quality design and help you cut away what you don’t need to focus on what you want. When you understand what’s left, you can appreciate beauty and quality more.

The F word

My design career brought me to a fast fashion brand. The number of clothes per drop (drops are multiple deliveries within a month, not seasons) was ridiculous, not to mention the money and resources wasted on discontinued samples. It changed my perspective on Fashion.

Clothes should have more meaning and longevity, supporting my principal design value of quality. I like to showcase the details that make a garment unique. Developing a relationship with the things we wear can help us appreciate the beauty of the garment.

My story - fashion, design & art interwoven

As a designer with over 20 years of experience in the fashion industry, it’s safe to say that I love fashion. I am passionate about deconstructing the conventional so it can be seen from a new perspective and highlight its true essence.

Fashion is a big part of my life. After working in several clothing boutiques as a teenager, I saw how clothing could transform a woman’s perception of herself. Then studying fashion for seven years at two art schools in the Netherlands, I developed an eye for collage-making. It helped me cut away the unnecessary and combine elements to create something new and better. I also started to question conventional design. How can a T-shirt get back its essence? How can I shed it in a new light, so it works differently with the body while still appreciating its design and workmanship?

Working for several years for a well-known denim brand, I learned the impact of small details and high-quality design. I then moved internationally to be a designer and fit specialist at a fast fashion brand in Beijing, China. This is where I incorporated collage-making skills into my design process – piecing together different clothes to create something new and unique.

My years in the fashion industry have exposed me to every aspect. I realized that clothing could make us feel confident and empowered, so I started Biekaleidoscope. Instead of designing more clothes, I want to be part of the solution.

I teach women how to make conscious wardrobe choices by decluttering and focusing on what makes them feel great. I help develop a stronger relationship with clothes, not by needing more but by creating beauty from what you already have. Much like the collage of life, it’s about embracing what speaks to you and discarding the rest to make it your own.

Biekindle

textile collage art

With Biekindle, you can easily turn an old but cherished article of clothing into a piece of art you can continue to love and appreciate. Unlike Marie Kondo’s method of simply getting rid of clothes to declutter your wardrobe, I offer a way to keep the story alive by cutting away the fabric, so that recognizable features create a new art context on your wall. This helps you reduce clutter while keeping cherished memories attached to clothing.

So many clothes end up in landfill. I wish to celebrate the beauty of fabrics and colors through textile sculptures. Scraps from Biekindle or clothes that cannot be resold due to minor damages, spots, or just because they’re high fashion basics, are cut into small pieces to decorate several sculptures. The visual of circles highlight the idea of cutting away the unnecessary and focusing on the essence of what’s really important to you. The idea is that a sculpture reminds you of clarity and the workmanship of clothing, by adding something of beauty to your home.

My passion for clothing enables me to challenge women to dress according to their personal style. This is where I combine this love with encouraging women to choose what they wear rather than following mainstream fashion trends. With an eye for detail, I combine images from art and fashion magazines, fabric, and yarns to create one-of-a-kind magazine art collages that build a women’s confidence. The result is playful and provocative images that toy with our conceptions of body image and question society’s conservative norms.

Moon Milk

Recurrent cycle collage art

Moon Milk is art that celebrates the individual beauty of women in all colours, shapes, sizes, and phases, reflecting my vision of working with what you have and making it beautiful. This art epitomizes how women are being the same in being different throughout their life journey, still sharing the bonds of sisterhood throughout. I use the moon’s cycle to represent this, as the moon is a feminine symbol representing the rhythm of time and the varying shades of a woman from light to dark within that.

The brand name

Biekaleidoscope

My business is called Biekaleidoscope because life is multifaceted. Everything is connected. I wanted to improve my health, so I started using clean skincare, which led to buying (as much as my little wallet allowed) organic vegetables. I also tried to buy fewer things and clothes, so I shopped more intentionally.

It also stands for the multifaceted nature of our identity, mostly seen through our clothes – a power suit can exist next to a comfy hoody and bold colors in your wardrobe. They all represent you, and that makes you unique.

Lastly, it’s about wearing a lens that creates your kaleidoscope of life. When you change your mindset, you create a different lens to view your life and everything in it.
